Tapak silat is a step pattern or floor plan that is used in silat to ease the step movements. It develops the silat exponent stances (kuda-kuda) and steps (langkah) in order to strike, to defend and to receive any strikes from opponent. The tapak silat is based on one or two legs position on the floor. Meanwhile, the step in silat means an activity that required a person to move his or her heel to walk or to move form one area to another area.

The tapak silat can be trained alone or with partner in order to develop the perfect silat moves. The maturity of silat moves in order to receive or attack cannot be mimicked or copied from others unless the silat exponent invests hours in training to develop these skills. Silat Melayu emphasizes on a proper step pattern movement as it can help silat exponent to defend and attack easily. Here are the seven step patterns and the explanation of each of them in seven levels of silat syllabus system;

1. Tapak Satu (standing on one or both legs).

2. Tapak Dua (moving on horizontal line).

3. Tapak Tiga (triangle shape step pattern).

4. Tapak Empat (rectangular shape step pattern).

5. Tapak Lima (star shape with five corners).

6. Tapak Bulat (circle shape step pattern).

7. Gabung (combination of all steps pattern in purpose of arrangement).

Tapak silat also is the secret technique for unarmed and practical self defense. One should never try to spar or fight until they get proper training in tapak silat. The self defense moves in fighting made easy once the silat exponents know how to combine the entire seven patterns in tapak silat either to receive or to strike the opponent.

Many people love to watch advance self defense moves either in the movie or in martial art competition. Every martial art has it owns identity and philosophy. For example, taekwondo emphasize more on fast kicks of speed in any combat situation. While aikido and jujitsu tend to catch, lock and make the opponent fall on the ground. So, it is important for every individual that wanted to learn martial art to know the uniqueness for every martial art before making any decision to learn it.

The fighting action in silat is also called as tempur silat. However, student needs to learn the soft technique first before learning the hard technique.

Tempur silat or silat combat is divided into two which are; Tempur Seni (the art of self defense combat) and Tempur Beladiri (the fast action of combat sparring). The main reason of this division is to emphasize the concept and meanings of two difference style in silat combat. Tempur seni emphasize more on ecstatic value of silat with specific do and don't rule. Tempur beladiri emphasize more on fast silat movements in order to fight with more than one opponent.

In addition, there is one secret technique in silat that helps many silat students to master the silat combat fast that known as Gerak Pantas. It means the action of attacking and defending movements that required fast, neat and effective actions that mimicked to real combat sparring. Silat combat maintains the characteristics of silat mode either in attacking or defending positions. The use of Sikap Pasang (to receive or to attack position), Langkah (steps) and Serang Bela (self defense techniques) are critical in order to plan the self defense moves in any fighting situation.

Meanwhile, the tempur seni combat consists of Tapak Empat (the silat movements in square pattern), Lilit (circling around the opponent) and Galah Panjang (marking the distance between each other). Tempur seni also used three types of strikes that based from traditional silat weapon system which are; Tikam (stabbing), Parang (chopping) and Tetak (hacking or notching). These strikes usually followed by seven receiving techniques which are; Tangkap (catching), Sentak (to pull at or out with a jerk), Kedu (to flex the arm down), Tindih (one on the top of the other), Sisip (to insert), Sagang (to be in silat alert position) and Potong (to counter attack). The silat exponent will learn the art of martial art fighting while practising all of these receiving techniques. It is better to practice these techniques with variety of opponent of different height, weight and size in order to understand the differences of strength and weakness levels.

In tempur beladiri, silat exponent will learn the unarmed self defense first before learns on how use weapon in advance level. This is important because silat exponent needs to master all the unarmed technique first in order to avoid any injuries in silat training. All the silat lessons will be given by the silat coach step-by-step for better understanding.

Thus, it is important for silat exponent to master both of these combat styles because both topics will help them to increase the level of fighting and understanding of self defense moves in silat combat. When the students master all the techniques as mentioned before, they can fight with any martial artists other than silat too.

In order to master this skill, any silat exponent can train jurus in single movement (tunggal) or repetitions (berulang). It also can be trained either in one direction (one straight line) or multiple directions combining with difference level of surface or also known as 'aras'. The movements of jurus silat in every level of silat curriculum are based from the movements of Bunga Silat. Here are the seven self defense moves that exist in jurus:

1. Tumbuk or punch (e.g. Straight punch or 'tumbuk terus')

3 Other Reasons Why Young People Learn Silat

There are many reasons for young students aged 12 to 17 years old to learn silat in Malaysia. Most people including their parents think the main reasons are because of self defense purposes. However, there are other reasons that influence youngsters to join silat training programs.

Scientific study showed that there are three main reasons besides of self defense factor on why young peoples involve in silat. There are; to release energy, family and friendship factors. These three reasons are the main participation factors that influence many young exponents to join silat training as their favourite co-curriculum activities in school. By knowing the factors that motivates many youngsters to involve in silat program, silat instructors can plan specific activities that can help to increase the number of participation in silat program.

The 'to release energy' factor is the main factor on why youngster involves in silat particularly between male and female exponents. The physical activities and exercises in silat training system will help the young exponents to stay fit and get in shape when they attend the training session. They also loves the challenge they get when participate in vigorous silat activities such as punching, kicking, jumping, evading, blocking, running, agility and speed movements training.

The second factor is the 'influence from family'. Family plays important roles for youngster to participate in silat sessions particularly between upper (16 and 17 years old) and lower form (13, 14 and 15 years old) in school. This is true if the father, mother or any sibling in the family involves in silat training, tournament or coaching. This factor is very important particularly for those who actively practise silat since they were kid.

The third factor is the 'friend factor'. This is the most interesting factor as it can increase the silat exponent performance in silat. This factor can be seen by silat instructor every year on number of participation of students from 13 years old age. This is because most of the students at 13 years old of age just moved from primary to secondary school. So, they follow their friend advice on which club or association to pick for their own co-curriculum activities. The bad news is that this is also the reason why many youngsters drop-out from silat training. This is happens when the silat exponents try to achieve the higher level in silat (red and black belt) but distracts by numbers of reasons such as examination year, tuition, lost interest, injury, entertainment and many more.

Thus, it is important for every silat coach to know these three factors that can influence students to actively involve in silat training program. A well-structured training program will help them to stay in the training until they leave their secondary school.

How to Win A Silat Olahrga Match

It is not easy to be a silat champion. You need to train harder and sacrifice many things to achieve the champion status. Many peoples thought that this sport requires a fighter with 'born to be a fighter' quality in order to win a silat match. In one point it is true. However, it is not always right. This is because silat olahraga is a point-based system sport that not only requires you to be good a fighter, but also requires you master the fighting tactics during the match.

Many so-called 'born to be a fighter' exponents fail in early silat competition due to the stupidity to read a game. They tend to use all the self defense moves and skills to show how good they are in silat. But, the true is, silat olahraga is a very simple sport. You only need to master three simple techniques to win a game. There are; punching, kicking and topple down.

Here are the explanations of each of the technique in silat olahraga;

1. The punching technique. The most dangerous technique in silat is straight-punch. The jury will reward you one point for every successful hit to your opponent. In addition, you need to be good at other skill such as blocking technique in order to gain more points in silat match. However, if you block the opponent strike and followed with a successful punch, the jury will reward you 'one plus one point' or two points.

Based on these issues, it is important for you to train the blocking technique in order to gain more points using the punching technique. Scientific research shows that the number of successful hit using the punching technique is more than the kicking technique. Thus, by combining both techniques, you will have advantage to win a silat olahraga match.

2. The kicking technique. Even thought, the scientific research shows that the percentage of successful punching technique is higher than kicking technique, the point scores for every successful kick is two points. Thus, the combination of successful blocking and kicking technique will reward you 'one plus two point' or three points. This is critical if you only rely on kicking technique. You need to combine both of the defensive and attacking techniques to win a silat game.

3. Topple down technique. The jury loves this technique. When a silat fight between two silat exponents is even, topple down technique can influence the result of the fight. The secret is to train this technique at least 100 times a day with your partner. You also need to record and improve this technique until it is perfect.

Silat olahraga is a sport that can enhance your silat skills with these three simple techniques. You need to make silat olahraga simple in order to win a silat match brilliantly.

Three Moves That Make Silat The Best Fighting Style In Self Defense

Silat is a national self defense in Malaysia. It is known as the best fighting style in self defense. The silat techniques have been used by police, royal army, securities and professional bodyguard in order to increase their self defense moves.

The strength of silat is based from the step movements and deadly skills that can knock out your enemy instantly. Many silat experts admit that the silat movements are originated from the art of war. Thus, all the techniques are based from human geometrical lines that suite with human movements. However, there are three self defense moves that you need to master in order to use silat effectively as self defense. There are;

1. Defensive moves. You need to master the defensive moves to counter strike your opponent. It is also important to determine the distance of your opponent from you in order to fight back with a proper defensive technique. In addition, you need to master the avoiding technique to receive any strikes from your opponent within 1-2 meters away from you. However, if the distance is within one meter, you need to block the strike. Both techniques should follow with counter strikes to your opponent either with hand or leg. The catching and locking techniques are only used to receive any fast strikes within 0.5 meter from you.

2. Attacking moves. The silat philosophy is 'to avoid the fight unless in desperate situation'. Thus, it is impossible to see any silat exponents involve in any crimes due to this quote. However, if there are any emergency situations, you can use your skills to stop any crimes including robbery, fighting or theft. Some attacking techniques that you need to master in order to attack are punching and kicking. You also need to master the fake strikes in order to confuse your opponent. These fighting techniques are important particularly when you fight with somebody that is bigger than you. Any strikes that aimed to specific killer point on your opponent body can help you to save time while fighting with more than two opponents.

3. Counter attack moves. This is a powerful skill that rarely found in other self defense. It is also known as 'potong'. Counter attack is used when your opponent catch your hand in order to lock your movements. Usually, your opponent will badly injure due to the effectiveness of this technique. This is the best skill to beat any martial arts or other self defense that emphasizes on catching and locking techniques.

Thus, silat is the best fighting style due to the factors described above in any fighting situation. This is because silat is originated from the art of war that emphasizes more on attacking moves rather than defensive moves. However, due to it uniqueness, many peoples falsely thought that silat is just for entertainment rather than self defense.

You need to double the amount of kicks for the weaker leg. This means for every 20 kicks with your dominant leg, you need to kick 40 times with your weaker leg. This formula helps many silat exponents to be able to improve their weaker leg speed and power.

The martial art training in silat emphasize on the ability of a person to master specific skills based on their own capability to cope with the silat training.
